Dark Schneider is the protagonist and main hero of Bastard!! as well as the self-proclaimed greatest wizard in the universe. Fifteen years ago, prior to the events of the current timeline, he had an army of wizards and warriors led by the Four Divine Kings, with the goal to subjugate the world under his rule. However, he was defeated and sealed away by Lars Ul Metallicana and the Five Heroes in an infant boy named Lucien Renlen. Fast forward to the current timeline, Dark Schneider has now reawakened and plans to realize his ambitions, but this time he is fighting for the more than himself.
Appearance[]
Dark Schneider is a tall man of a muscular and well-defined build. He has a fair complexation with long unkempt silver hair, blue eyes, and black bushy eyebrows. He is considered to be extraordinarily handsome by those of the fairer sex (and himself). His clothing greatly varies throughout the series, but it usually consists of robes or tunic with a cape and shoulder pads. He is also shown in multiple scenes to be without clothes because he is very proud of his sex appeal.
Personality[]
Well-known for his extremely powerful abilities, Dark Schneider is practically one of, if not, the most powerful wizard in the series and never fails to remind his peers so. With all this power, however, comes an incredibly big ego, always performing overly destructive spells just to assert his dominance. He is selfish, violent and narcissistically believes himself to be the pinnacle of power and masculinity. Dark Schneider also has a strong lust for women, and is rather infamous for his womanizing and sexist ways. At one point, he planned on creating a harem of every woman on the planet using them for his gratification. He is also known for his violent, borderline psychotic attitude once thrown into a fight. Almost no one can control him, except for Tia Noto Yoko, who is his main love interest.
He has shown to have slightly softer side to him though, specifically around Tia Noto Yoko and his companions. He is seen in great distress when he believes Yoko is dead. He also gets extremely angry and jealous when he believes that Gara slept with her. He is influenced at times by his other half, Lucien, even when he isn't aware of it.
History[]
Little is truly known of the origins of Dark Schneider. His earliest known appearance was 400 years before the beginning of the series, when the Destruction God of the Darkness (暗黒の破壊神) Anthrasax and its army destroyed the Old World, where he was apparently freed from the Dragon Knight after it defeated the God of Destruction. It was suggested he was genetically engineered by the Ten Wise Men of Europa to serve as the Dragon Knight's pilot, but that has yet to be confirmed. He then traveled the world as a wizard, having achieved magical immortality.
Around 300 years later, he met an orphaned half-dark elf named Nei (meaning nothing) and adopted her, renaming her Arshes Nei. She became his traveling companion and apprentice in the magic arts. Not long after, they met a young orphan boy named Kall-Su with powerful ice magic, and Dark Schneider adopted him as well. Dark Schneider told Kall-Su that half of himself was taken from him, and that until he found his missing half, Kall-Su would have to stand in its place. He raised them and trained them both in magic as his apprentices until they both nearly rivaled him in magical strength.
When Kall and Nei were still very young, Dark Schneider employed a different group of Four Divine Lords of Havok: the Silent General Shishi Lizzy, the Assassin Guildmaster Iason Gillan, the Dark Knight Gain Esperanza, and the sadistic half-succubus sorceress Ikal Monroe. Monroe was also a lecherous lesbian who maintained a collection of harem girls large enough to rival Dark Schneider's own, and he had gotten into a fight with Monroe because he wanted one of hers for himself.
Together, Dark Schneider, Lizzy, Gillan, Gain, and their armies sailed to a new continent in an attempt to conquer it. Kall and Nei were told to stay home for their own safety, but they followed him there anyway by stowing away on a boat, Nei because she loved Dark Schneider too much to be apart from him, and Kall because he wanted to protect him.
Dark Schneider battled the Beast Emperor of the continent, but because magic was much weaker there, the Beast Emperor defeated him. Dark Schneider felt there was no dishonor in such a death until the Beast Emperor devoured his innards and left him for dead. Dark Schneider's intense hatred for the Beast Emperor for that act kept him alive.
Gain Esperanza saw an opportunity to steal Dark Schneider's powerful spirit with his soul-sucking sword, the Soul Eater, but as he prepared to slay the wizard, Kall-Su mortally wounded Gain and ultimately took his place among the Four Divine Kings. Dark Schneider was later sewn up and nursed back to health, allowing him to seek revenge against the Beast Emperor. At some point, Monroe died defending Dark Schneider from enemy attacks. The Soul Eater was eventually passed down to one of Kall-Su's twelve Sorcerer-Shoguns, John Sol Vandenberg.
Darsh, Nei, and Kall traveled together, occasionally adding other companions to their group, and losing others. Dark Schneider had a penchant for taking on countless lovers. Eventually, when she came of age, Arshes Nei became his longest-standing lover, as she had both the near immortality of an elf and her own enormous magical powers. Unbeknownst to her, he kept a large harem of women on the side, which Arshes would ultimately discover and come to resent him for.
Eventually, Dark Schneider started his campaign to rule the world, and began attacking kingdom after the kingdom. His followers took the titles Thunder Empress Arshes Nei and Ice Lord Kall-Su, and the Dark Prophet of the Underworld Abigail and Ninja Master Gara came to join them as well, becoming his new Four Heavenly Kings. They had nearly conquered the world when they marched on the kingdom of Metallicana.
At Metallicana, Dark Schneider fought a great battle against the kingdom's forces, but he was inevitably defeated by the Five Heroes of Metallicana. They consisted of the Great Priest Geo Noto Soto, the Black Witch of the Frontier Selene Tempest, the samurai Neals Schon Mifune, the ex-pirate assassin Dana Meniketti, and the Dragon Warrior Prince Lars Ul Metallicana. Prince Lars invoked the power of the Dragon Knight Proto I to stop Dark Schneider.
But as Dark Schneider was the Dragon Knight's destined user, it cursed Lars by trapping his human body and sealing his soul in the form of a baby dragon. Dark Schneider used a spell of reincarnation to survive the battle by reincarnating himself as a newborn baby boy. The Bastard!! HAQ book states that Lars's lover, Princess Aaron, gave birth to him around ten months after Dark Schneider and Lars disappeared in battle. But the Great Priest Geo Noto Soto used the seal of Ino Mata, Goddess of Beauty, to prevent Dark Schneider from manifesting from the child.
Geo raised the boy, now named Lucien Renlen, alongside his daughter Tia Noto Yoko, who was only a year older than Lucien and lost her mother Tempest at an early age. She acted as Lucien's loving older sister and protector, and the childishly innocent Lucien grew to love her for it. Geo told his daughter of the terrible power sealed away in Lucien, a seal which he taught her to undo, and instructed her to maintain her chastity for, in case they ever needed to summon Dark Schneider as a last resort.
Unfortunately, in the fifteen years following Dark Schneider's defeat, the Four Heavenly Kings sought the power of the God of Destruction Anthrasax. As soon as Abigail touched the seal of Anthrasax in Judas Castle, which likely occurred sometime between Chapters 0 and 1, Anthrasax's spirit took possession of him and then took Kall-Su sometime after that. It used them to send Dark Schneider's Four Heavenly Kings and their Dark Rebel Armies on a mission to release the four seals binding the God of Destruction. Abigail convinced the others to continue their crusade by claiming they would have a means to control Anthrasax upon its release and could use its power to turn the world into a sorcerer's utopia they would rule. These claims, of course, were all lies, a clever deception crafted by Anthrasax.
Though it's possible that the real Abigail actually believed such a thing was possible before he was possessed. If so, that may be the reason they initially sought Anthrasax in the first place. But that would be quite strange, considering Abigail was one of the Ten Wise Men of Europa who created Anthrasax in the first place.
The four seals of Anthrasax were guarded by the kingdoms of Judas, Whytos Neiki, Iron Maiden, and Metallicana. The Four Heavenly Kings sent their forces to besiege each kingdom in order to break the seal within. The knights of Metallicana were able to defend the kingdom until it was besieged by the sorcerer Osborn. Lars's sister, Princess Sheila, begged Yoko to summon the great sorcerer contained within Lucien in order to stop him. Yoko was forced to reluctantly share her virgin's kiss with Lucien and undo the seal of the goddess Ino Mata, resurrecting Dark Schneider.
Retaining his memories as Lucien, Dark Schneider had fallen in love with Yoko, and felt he owed her for protecting him. Though he cared nothing for the rest of the kingdom, he slaughtered Osbourne with Venom to save her. He then stole a kiss from Yoko, inadvertently transforming him back into Lucien.
The kingdom soon fell under attack again by Kevidubu, one of Kall-Su's sorcerers who attacked Metallicana with his massive Hydra to avenge Osborn. Geo convinced Yoko to again reluctantly summon Dark Schneider from Lucien. But rather than defend the kingdom, he tried to butcher the Great Priest for the part he played in his defeat fifteen years ago with the lightning spell Balvolt. He defended himself with Stryper, so Dark Schneider summoned a golem from beneath the castle. Before it could kill the cleric, he was interrupted by the entrance of Kevidubu and his Hydra.
After insulting the lesser sorcerer, Dark Schneider used Venom to kill the man and his golem to kill the Hydra. He then attempted to resume his assault on the Great Priest, but Yoko grabbed him to try to make him stop, telling him he was too cruel to be her Lucien. Dark Schneider explained that he and Lucien shared the same soul, so if Lucien died, he'd die with him, and what Lucien loves, he loves, thus hinting at his potential romantic feelings for Yoko. Yoko didn't believe him, so the sorcerer decided to prove it by kissing her, willingly transforming himself back into Lucien Renren. Yoko warmly embraced her little brother, noting he even smelled like her Lucien again. But Yoko would constantly need to enlist Dark Schneider's help throughout the manga to protect her kingdom and the Princess and to stop the forces of Anthrasax, and Yoko proved to be the only one who could even remotely control his destructive tendencies.
Over the next two years, Dark Schneider ultimately defeated the Four Heavenly Lords of Havok and their Dark Rebel Armies and turned most of them to his side. Together, they fought against Anthrasax and its forces until Dark Schneider was killed in battle with Anthrasax and sent to Alcatrazz space and then Hell.
During the time Dark Schneider was away, Yoko was attacked by an army of angels that emerged from Anthrasax in the Spirit Energy Reactor in the elven city of King Crimson Glory. To save her, Lucien Renren revealed himself to be the fallen archangel Lucifer and projected a powerful astral body from Alcatrazz space to protect Yoko from the other angels. Lucien convinced Abigail to remove the four limiters on the Spirit Energy Reactor in the elven city of King Crimson Glory and set it to critically overload in order to produce enough light energy to free Dark Schneider from Alcatrazz space and ultimately allow him to come back to life.
In Hell, Satan tried to recruit Dark Schneider to his cause, but he refused. Dark Schneider then defeated the Supreme Demon Generalissimo Porno Di'Anno, freed the Seraph Gabriel, and obtained six more fragments of the Judas Pain jewel by defeating six of the seven Demon Kings who each had one, leaving Beelzebub the only Demon King with a fragment still in his possession. Since Dark Schneider was born with one of the fragments in his soul already, this left him with seven of the eight fragments of the Judas Pain jewel in total, with allowed him to finally return to the Earth four years after he'd left. But in doing so, he opened the way for Gabriel and various demons and fallen angels to also escape from Hell to the Earth.
Upon Dark Schneider's return, he begrudgingly helped Gabriel and her fellow Seraphim slay the demon Conlon, who had consumed Uriel's beloved sister Amriel on Satan's orders in an attempt to turn him into the next Demon King. Dark Schneider devoured Conlon's head, and by extension Amriel, with a second mouth that emerged from his chest. As a result, Uriel did indeed become a fallen angel, unleashing terrible levels of monstrous power, forcing Dark Schneider to finally assimilate with the Dragon Knight Lucifer to properly fight with him. After an intense battle that threatened to destroy reality, Dark Schneider eventually grew tired of fighting Uriel. So, he used God-level creation powers to restore Amriel to life, causing Uriel to revert back to his humanoid form before disappearing. Dark Schneider was soon congratulated by the surviving Seraphim, Gara, and many of his other miraculously resurrected friends. Gabriel expressed interest in becoming Dark Schneider's guardian angel or even his wife.
Only Yoko was not present for this reunion, and only because the explosion of the overloaded Spirit Energy Reactor that freed Dark Schneider from Alcatrazz space and restored him to life presumably sent her to Hell. There, the waters of the River Lethe robbed Yoko of her memories, though she retained her appearance, fiery no-nonsense attitude, and love of humanity. She was found by Beelzebub, who renamed her Lilith and brought her to his lair as his unwilling bride-to-be. They witnessed Dark Schneider's fight with Uriel remotely in the company of various succubi, and she regularly responded to Beelzebub's comments on the battle.
Origins[]
In the 13th volume, when Dark Schneider and his allies meet with the Sages of Europa for the first time, some information about the circumstances of his birth is revealed.
He appears to be the product of a genetic manipulation experiment[1] from the Old World as Anthrasax was, and is somehow related to him, since both their powers come from "darkness" and their power increases after breaking the seven seals at the same time.
The Sages order him to defeat Anthrasax by becoming the new Dragon Knight, but he refuses to take orders from them, viewing them as geezer hypocrites because they were the Dark Goddess's actual creators and because they were the ones who defeated him 17 years ago. Despite pointing out his humanity and his attempts to rebel against them, the Sages laugh at Dark Schneider. They beat him, claiming he is merely a dummy created by them (apparently through parthenogenesis), so he won't be able to oppose them with his magic.
The Sages then try to use their codes to transform Dark Schneider into the new Dragon Knight. However, it is revealed that the true identity of the tenth Sage is Abigail, and he doesn't agree with them, betting on the current Dark Schneider achieving victory as-is, as he's now whole after becoming one with Luche and demonstrating human feelings.
Powers[]
- Enhanced Strength: He's incredibly strong, being capable of stopping the True Majinken of Gara with one hand. After his resurrection, his strength increases dramatically, to the point that he can dent Lynch's Demon Mail with mere punches.
- Enhanced Durability: He's able to withstand heavy physical damage, seen when he took Balvolt from Osborn at point-blank with no injuries.
- Regeneration: After the battle with Gara, he regrew his arm, even though he was exhausted.
- Fire Sword: He's the wielder of the Fire Sword, with it he's capable of launching blows strong enough to destroy entire armors.
- Magic and Spells: Dark Schneider's most known ability is his magic and spells casting, on the point of being known as the Legendary Sorcerer. He is a master of fire magics, and well versed in spells of thunder and lightning as well as Black Magic. He has stated to lack any spells involving ice and cold, though he has a means of invoking such magics.
- Sexual Domination: Dark Schneider has the power to seduce and sexually dominate females of any species, whether human or not . After complete domination (which culminates in the sexual act) the female falls in love with him and becomes his aligned and does anything he asks from her, as long as it does not cause harm to someone that she loves.
- Judas Pain: Dark Schneider has six shards (technically seven, since as the Adam of Darkness, he has his own shard in his heart) of the Judas Pain, an object which can open the gates of Hell. By using these shards, he can change into Majin Form, and by chain activating them he summon the Dragon Knight.[2]
- Creation: Being the man closest to god, Dark Schneider has gained to power to reconstruct the dead, even Angels.[3]
- Splitting: Can split himself up into small versions of himself that can then reform into his larger self.[4]
- Other abilities: He also can shapeshift, react at superhuman speed, increase his attributes and transform into other forms that increase his power by trillions. He can tell virgins by their smell.[5]
- Magic Vision: Lets D.S. see hidden things.
- Fire Breath: Lets D.S. breathe fire without the use of spells.
- Build Up: Lets D.S. combine himself after splitting into pieces.
- Sumo: Knows the ancient art of Sumo wrestling, though uses it only for sex.

Weaknesses[]
Incomplete Reincarnation: Dark Schneider was sealed by the high priest of metalicana Geo Noto Soto and the old hag Baba, he could only be awakened by a virgin's kiss, leaving his soul trapped in Lucien's body until a virgin kisses him.
Absorption of the Seal's Feelings: Due to the fact that he is sealed inside Lucien Renlen's body, Dark Schneider ends up just observing everything the boy does and absorbs some of his feelings, such as the love he feels for Tia Noto Yoko and also the fear that Lucien has of her fighting with him.
Divine Magic Weakness: Despite being an incredibly powerful sorcerer, Dark Schneider's dark sorcery is useless against divine magic and cannot attack those who possess divine magic.
Exhaustion: If Dark Schneider uses his magic in large amounts, he will be quite weakened to the point that he will temporarily lose his magical powers, leaving him temporarily human.
Ice Magic: Dark Schneider is unable to use any water or ice magic spells.[6]

- He gets his name from German heavy metal vocalist Udo Dirkschneider. The spell used to free him, "Accept," shares its name with the band that Dirkschneider is known for being the original vocalist of.
- The name, Dark Schneider, is also a derogatory way to say "Black Cock", which makes sense due to the themes and nature of the manga
- In his 400+ year life span Dark Schneider is known to have slept with anywhere from 200-300 women.[7]
